Netflix: Odd Thomas Review – April 20, 2015

There is something odd about Thomas. It might be the way he talks or his personality in general, or it might just be the fact that Thomas can see ghosts. Odd Thomas is based on a novel by Dean Koontz of the same title. Something big is going to happen in Pico Mundo unless Thomas can use his unique ability to help stop it.

The viewer is first introduced to Thomas (Anton Yelchin) when a ghost is telling him about the man who raped her. Thomas confronts this man and after a chance and a scuffle, the police show up to arrest the rapist. This is where the viewers learn that the Sheriff, Wyatt Porter (Willem Dafoe), knows of Thomas’ secret.

While working at the diner, Thomas notices an unusual amount of bodachs.  Bodachs are demons that feed on pain and death who always show up when a tragic event is about to take place. Odd Thomas realizes something extremely bad is about to happen in Pico Mundo, and he needs to take action to stop it. Thomas teams up with his girlfriend, Stormy Llewellyn (Addison Timlin) and the Sheriff to prevent the massacre that is about to take place.

Odd Thomas is an action packed movie that takes twists and turns with every new sequence.  This is a movie that keeps the viewer involved and interested in seeing what is going to happen next as well as having the heart pounding moments along with the heart breaking moments that make it a very clenching thriller. Odd Thomas also has its light humor moments which is a nice change of pace amongst the on the edge of your seat action moments.

However, Odd Thomas is not without its flaws. The glaring flaw being a somewhat predictable ending. Although the ending was exactly what the movie needed, it is one that is predictable and less favorable then endings that could have been.

Positives: Thrilling moments keep the viewer involved, Combination of on the edge of your seat action, heart breaking moments, and humor give a nice change of pace throughout the entire movie

Negatives: Somewhat predictable ending

Overall: 7.7/10

Odd Thomas was a very enjoyable movie that is definitely worth a look. Despite a predictable ending, the movie keeps the audience on the edge throughout and makes the viewers want to learn what happens next.
