Sometimes people feel like they are just going through the motions. They wake up, go to work, pretend to be happy, go home, rinse and repeat. These people put on a front for those they work with or work for, they pretend they are happy, but are they really?
This is exactly where Hector (Simon Pegg) finds himself. Hector is a psychiatrist who tries to help other people get through those rough times in life and find their happy place. Hector has a good life, a good job, and a good girlfriend, Clara (Rosamund Pike). One day Hector asks himself, is he truly happy? Does he even know what it would take to make himself truly happy?
These questions are where the journey begins. Hector decides to take a journey around the World to find the meaning of true happiness. He travels with a journal and asks people what their version of happiness entails. He meets plenty of different people from all across the globe, all of whom have a different take on happiness.
Hector and the Search for Happiness is an intriguing movie. It is filled with drama, a few laughs, and enough action to keep the viewer interested in finding out what happiness really is. Simon Pegg has a charm that connects to viewers and makes them root for him in his quest.
Like Hector, the movie feels lost at times. Simon Pegg is a funny actor, and Peter Chelsom should have used that to his advantage.
Positives: Simon Pegg is a charming actor that connects to the viewers, the viewers get sucked into the search for happiness like Hector does, a movie that one wants to continue watching until the end
Negatives: More touches of comedy would have made the movie a lot stronger
Definitely a movie to check out at least once. Hector and the Search for Happiness will keep a viewer engrossed to the end and really get one connected in Hector’s search. Simon Pegg is a charming actor and really shows it in his portrayal of Hector. While a few more laughs could have been thrown in to make the movie stronger, it is still a movie that will make the viewer’s heart race and come back down to Earth throughout the entire film.
