Nightcrawler (Netflix) Review – August 23, 2015

It’s hard to make a living. One has to submit a resume, hope that the hiring manager likes the resume enough to get an interview, then the interview has to go well, and if all goes well, one can find himself in a good position.

Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is just trying to make a living. Unfortunately, his resume is not very good coupled with the fact that he is a formal criminal is making it tough for Lou to find work. Early on Lou learns that sometimes there is no better way to make money then by working for himself as a freelance crime camera man. Bloom quickly learns in this cutthroat business that one has to be willing to do whatever it takes to get the best camera angle even if it means breaking the law.

Jake Gyllenhaal does a great job of embodying the cold, adaptable Lou Bloom to enhance the drama of Nighcrawler.  Combined with outstanding performances of Rene Russo as Nina and Bill Paxton as Joe Loder, Nightcrawler is a fun, action packed crime drama that takes the viewer behind the scenes of freelance crime journalism.

Positives: Outstanding acting from the entire cast.  Continually progressing story keeps the viewer engaged.  The cold, brilliant Lou Bloom gives the audience many “wow” moments.

Overall: 9.4/10

There is not much one can dislike about Nightcrawler.  Great action, great acting, and great storyline put Nightcrawler at the top of many people’s favorite movie lists.
